Background of the study
The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound effects on mental health worldwide, and Surulere Local Government Area in Lagos State is no exception. The prolonged period of social isolation, economic uncertainties, and the pervasive fear of infection have contributed to heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and stress among residents (Adetokunbo, 2023). Mental health services have been stretched thin as demand surged during the pandemic, highlighting systemic vulnerabilities in local healthcare provision. Emerging studies suggest that the mental health repercussions of COVID-19 extend beyond the acute phase of the pandemic, potentially affecting long-term psychological well-being (Olatunde, 2024). Moreover, community support systems have struggled to adapt to rapidly changing conditions, further exacerbating the mental health crisis (Balogun, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted impact of the pandemic on mental health, exploring factors such as service accessibility, coping mechanisms, and the socio-economic determinants that have shaped individual responses to the crisis.

Statement of the problem
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant deterioration in mental health in Surulere, with increased rates of anxiety, depression, and stress among residents. The surge in mental health issues has overwhelmed local services, highlighting deficiencies in mental health care and support systems. Inadequate resources, coupled with the stigma surrounding mental health, have resulted in limited access to timely intervention, further compounding the crisis (Adetokunbo, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in Surulere.

  2. To identify factors contributing to mental health deterioration during the pandemic.

  3. To propose strategies for improving mental health support services.

Research questions:

  1. How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected mental health in Surulere?

  2. What are the main factors contributing to increased mental health issues during the pandemic?

  3. How can mental health services be improved in response to pandemic-related challenges?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased mental health issues in Surulere.

  2. Economic uncertainty and social isolation are major contributors to mental health deterioration.

  3. Improved mental health services can mitigate the adverse effects of the pandemic.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of the mental health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Surulere. Its findings will inform local health authorities and community organizations to develop targeted interventions for mental health recovery (Adetokunbo, 2023; Balogun, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study focuses solely on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in Surulere Local Government Area, examining local mental health services and community responses.

Definitions of terms:

  • Mental Health: A state of emotional and psychological well-being.

  • COVID-19 Pandemic: The global outbreak of the coronavirus disease beginning in 2019.

  • Service Accessibility: The ease with which individuals can obtain health services.
